Where Do We Paint in Sidney
Pride Painting’s Victoria office is based in Oak Bay on Beach Drive, and we work the Saanich Peninsula regularly.
We serve all of Sidneyincluding the Beacon Avenue core, Roberts Bay, Ardwell, Resthaven, Bazan Bay and the waterfront, along with the neighbouring Peninsula communities.
Whether your place is a rancher near Roberts Bay, a patio home off Beacon Avenue, or a custom build with a Salish Sea view, the prep is what decides how long the finish lasts.
Painting in Sidney is rarely a simple recoat. It means washing salt off before a brush touches the surface, choosing coatings that stand up to constant wind and sun, and working within strata colour schemes where they apply. That is the work we do here.

About Sidney

Sidney by the Sea is a small town with a big exposure problem, and that makes it good painting country. Beacon Avenue runs straight down to the Sidney Pier and the Salish Sea, with the Shaw Centre, the waterfront walkway and a view across to James Island and the Gulf Islands. Swartz Bay and the Victoria International Airport sit just up the road. Most of the town was built between the 1960s and the 1990s, it skews toward retirees and downsizers, and almost every house in it is close enough to the water to taste it.
Homes and Architecure of Sidney
Sidney’s housing is newer than the older Greater Victoria municipalities and considerably more consistent. The bulk of it is 1960s through 1990s: single storey ranchers and ramblers, modest bungalows on flat lots, and a large stock of patio homes and low rise strata complexes built for downsizers. Stucco, vinyl and wood siding all appear, often with aluminum or wood trim and shallow roof pitches. Along the waterfront and up toward Roberts Bay and Ardwell you find larger custom homes and newer builds with more glass. Downtown around Beacon Avenue, low rise condo buildings and mixed use blocks fill in the core.
What that means for a paint job:
- Salt exposure is close to universal here, so washing before painting is not optional
- Single storey homes are quick to access, which keeps exterior projects efficient and affordable
- Patio home and strata complexes usually carry a fixed exterior colour scheme
Weather and how it affects paint in Sidney
Sidney sits in the Saanich Peninsula rain shadow and gets some of the lowest rainfall in Canada, which gives it a long and reliable exterior painting season from April into October. The trade off is exposure. Wind and salt come off the Salish Sea almost constantly, and salt deposits on siding, trim and railings will undermine a new coat if the surface was not properly washed first. East facing elevations take the brunt of it. Open flat lots also mean more direct sun than in the treed inland communities, so UV fade shows up early on south facing walls and on any deep colour.
Permits, bylaws and heritage rules for painting in Sidney
Repainting an existing house in Sidney does not require a building permit. It falls under maintenance. Two things are worth confirming first.
Stratas. Sidney has an unusually high proportion of patio homes, townhomes and low rise strata buildings relative to its size. Those complexes almost always have an approved exterior colour palette written into their bylaws or their original development permit, and individual owners generally cannot repaint a unit exterior, a door or even trim without strata council approval. If you own in a complex, start there rather than at the paint store.
Heritage. Sidney maintains a heritage inventory and has a small number of recognized older buildings, mostly commercial along Beacon Avenue and a handful of early residences. Formal designations are rare and residential repainting is very unlikely to trigger a heritage alteration permit, but confirm if your property is designated.
Trees and access. The Town regulates tree removal and pruning. Given how many Sidney lots are small and tightly landscaped, confirm before cutting anything back for access.

"I would Highly Recommend Pride Painting!"
Their service was very customer oriented from the get go and they communicated well. The painters were professional, well mannered, and relaxed. I felt confident in their abilities and could leave them to their work without concern. I was happy with the result of the painting, save for a couple of minor imperfections which weren’t noticed until the paint had really come together. When I let Pride Painting know of my concerns regarding the imperfections, they took it seriously and, in my perspective, made it a priority to fix without delay. The painters were back quickly, within my availability, and remedied the imperfections. The end result was fantastic. I am very happy with this company, and would absolutely go to them again or recommend them to others.

When prepping a home for residential painters, here are some key points to keep in mind:
- Clear the Area: Remove any furniture, decorations, or obstacles that could hinder the painting process. Clearing the area will provide easy access for the painters and protect your belongings from potential damage.
- Protect Surfaces: Cover or move anything that cannot be removed, such as large furniture or fixtures, to shield them from paint drips or splatters. Use drop cloths, plastic sheets, or painter's tape to protect floors, countertops, windows, and other surfaces not being painted.
- Clean the Surfaces: Ensure that the surfaces to be painted are clean and free of dust, dirt, grease, or other contaminants. Wash the walls with a mild detergent and water, and allow them to dry thoroughly before the painters arrive.
- Repair Any Damage: Inspect walls, ceilings, and other surfaces for cracks, holes, or imperfections. Repair these areas with spackle or putty, and sand them smooth to ensure a high-quality finish.
- Remove Wallpaper or Loose Paint: If wallpaper or loose paint is present, remove it before the painters begin. Properly strip wallpaper or scrape off flaking paint to create a clean, even surface.
- Communicate Your Expectations: Clearly communicate your expectations, color choices, and any specific requirements to the painters. Discuss any concerns or questions to ensure they understand your vision for the project.
- Consider External Factors: If painting the exterior, trim any shrubs, bushes, or tree branches that may obstruct access. Ensure the painters have a clear path and adequate space to work safely.
- Notify Occupants or Neighbors: If you're in a shared building or close to neighbors, notify them in advance. This allows them to take precautions, such as closing windows or moving vehicles.
- Secure Valuable or Fragile Items: Move any valuable or fragile items to a safe location away from the painting area to prevent accidental damage or disruption.
- Plan for Temporary Inconveniences: Be prepared for possible disruptions, such as limited access to certain areas or changes to daily routines. Coordinate with the painters to minimize inconvenience.
By following these preparation steps, you can help ensure a smooth and successful painting process when working with residential painters.
How much does a residential paint job typically cost?
The cost of a residential paint job can vary based on several factors, including the size of the home, the type and quality of paint used, the complexity of the surfaces, and your geographic location. On average, however, you can expect to pay between $2,000 and $5,000 for a standard-sized home.
Please check out this blog and vidoe where we breakdown how much it costs to do interior painting.
How long does a residential paint job usually take?
The duration of a residential paint job depends on factors such as the size of the project and the number of coats required. Typically, it can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to complete.
Do I need to prepare my walls before painting?
Yes, proper preparation is crucial for achieving a good paint job. You should clean the walls to remove dirt, dust, and grease. If there are any holes or cracks, they should be filled and sanded. Additionally, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to ensure better adhesion and a smoother finish.
Can I paint over wallpaper?
While it's technically possible to paint over wallpaper, it's generally not recommended. Paint may not adhere properly to the wallpaper surface, leading to a subpar result. It's often better to remove the wallpaper before painting to ensure a smooth and long-lasting finish.
How often should I repaint the interior of my home?
The frequency of repainting depends on several factors, including the quality of the previous paint job, the type of paint used, and the level of wear and tear in your home. On average, interior paint should be refreshed every 5 to 10 years. However, high-traffic areas like hallways and kitchens may require more frequent repainting.
Can I paint in cold or humid weather?
Ideally, painting should be done in moderate temperatures (around 50-85°F or 10-30°C) and when humidity levels are relatively low. Cold or humid weather can affect the drying and curing process of paint, leading to potential issues like poor adhesion or longer drying times. It's best to consult with a professional painter to determine the optimal conditions for your specific project.
Do I need to vacate my home during the painting process?
In most cases, you can remain in your home during a residential paint job. However, it's a good idea to discuss this with your painter, as there may be situations where temporarily vacating the premises is recommended, such as when strong odours or extensive work are involved.
How do you create color schemes, and how can I visualize them for my painting project?
We create color schemes based on expert color theory to ensure a harmonious look for your space. To visualize your own color schemes, we recommend using the Sherwin-Williams Color Tools available here. This tool lets you design and see different color combinations, helping you choose the perfect colors for your project.
