Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets
Dark oak cupboards, and you want white.
That’s the most common kitchen job we’re asked for, by a distance. Refinishing the cabinets you already have costs a fraction of replacing them and changes the room more than anything else you could paint.
Doors and drawer fronts come off, get labelled, and are cleaned, degreased, sanded and primed before a durable finish goes on. Frames and boxes are done in place. The island is part of the same job.
Two questions we get constantly:
“Do you take the doors off and paint them offsite, or do it in place? And do you spray or brush?”
“Roughly 20 cupboard doors and drawers, currently brown, and we’d like them white. Can you also do the bathroom vanity while you’re here?”
Yes to all of it. Bathroom vanities are quoted alongside kitchen cabinets all the time — it’s the same work, and doing both in one visit is cheaper than two.
Two-tone kitchens are popular right now too: one colour on the uppers, something deeper on the lowers or the island. Happy to quote it either way.
And if you started the job yourself and stalled halfway through the sanding, you’re in good company. We can pick it up from wherever you got to.
Doing the bathroom as well? Worth bundling. And if you’re refreshing a kitchen to sell rather than to live with, see pre-sale painting.

Kitchen Walls and Ceilings
Two things matter more in a kitchen than anywhere else in the house:
- Degreasing. Cooking leaves an invisible oil film on walls and ceilings near the stove. Paint doesn’t stick to it. This is the step that gets skipped and the reason kitchen paint fails early.
- A washable finish. Eggshell or satin, not flat. It means splashes get wiped off instead of touched up.
Kitchen ceilings collect the same film and often yellow above the stove. If you paint the walls and skip the ceiling, the ceiling will look worse afterwards by comparison.
Open-plan kitchen? Most newer Island homes don’t have a natural place for the colour to stop. We’ll usually recommend one continuous colour with the change at a structural break rather than an invented line, and quote it as one flowing space. If it’s part of a bigger project, see interior painting, or our condo painting page if you’re in an apartment or condo.
Why Choose Pride Painting
Cabinet doors get touched a hundred times a day, which means a cabinet finish shows a shortcut faster than any wall in the house. Proper degreasing, proper sanding, the right primer and a durable topcoat are what separate a kitchen that still looks good in five years from one that starts chipping at the handles within months. Every project comes with a written estimate and a clear scope.

What Does It Cost to Paint Kitchen Cabinets?
Cabinets are priced by the door and drawer count, not by the room. When you get in touch, count your doors and drawer fronts and tell us roughly what they’re made of and what colour they are now. That alone gets you a useful ballpark.
What else moves it: whether the island is included, whether you’re going lighter over a dark stain (which usually needs an extra coat), whether any doors need repair first, and whether a bathroom vanity is being done at the same time. Walls and ceilings are quoted separately from cabinetry, so you can do one, the other, or both.

Paint, or Restain?
A few people ask whether to keep the wood tone and restain rather than paint over it. It’s a fair question and the answer depends on the doors you have.
Paint gives you any colour you like, including the dark-to-white change most people are after, and it works on almost any door. Restaining keeps the grain visible but only really works on solid wood in decent condition, and it can’t take you dramatically lighter.
Worth knowing: not every cabinet door is solid wood. Some, including a lot of flat-pack kitchens, are foil-wrapped or laminated rather than timber. Those can be painted very successfully but need a different primer, so it’s the first thing we check when we look at your kitchen. If you’re not sure what yours are, we’ll tell you.
How a Cabinet Refinish Works
- Count and quote — doors, drawer fronts, island, and whether a vanity is joining the job
- Doors come off and get labelled — hardware removed and kept safe
- Degrease, sand, prime — the part that decides whether the finish lasts
- Durable topcoat applied — sprayed for a smooth, brush-mark-free finish
- Frames and boxes done in place — masked off and finished to match
- Rehung and adjusted — doors back on, hardware refitted, kitchen usable again

The Room You Stand In Most…
You spend more waking hours in the kitchen than almost anywhere else in the house, looking at those cupboard doors from about three feet away while you wait for something to boil.
Refinishing them costs a fraction of replacing them, and it’s usually a matter of days rather than the weeks a new kitchen takes.
Send us a photo and a rough door count. We’ll tell you what’s involved and what it costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you take the cabinet doors off, or paint them in place?
Doors and drawer fronts come off and are labelled so every one goes back exactly where it came from. That’s the only way to get a clean, even finish on the edges and profiles. The frames and boxes are masked and finished in place.
Do you spray or brush kitchen cabinets?
Sprayed, for a smooth finish without brush marks. Cabinet doors are the most closely inspected surface in the house — you look at them from a foot away, dozens of times a day — so the finish quality matters more here than on a wall.
Can you paint dark oak cupboards white?
Yes, and it’s the most common request we get. Going dramatically lighter over a dark stain usually needs an extra coat and the right stain-blocking primer, so it costs a little more than a like-for-like colour change. It also transforms the room more than anything else you could paint.
Can you repair chipped or damaged doors first?
Minor repairs to chipped edges and tired doors can usually be handled as part of the job. Tell us about anything damaged when you get in touch so it’s in the quote rather than a surprise. Badly failed doors are sometimes better replaced than refinished, and we’ll say so if that’s the case.
Can you do the bathroom vanity at the same time?
Yes, and plenty of people do. It’s the same work and the same setup, so doing both in one visit costs less than booking them separately.
