Had a small job that Pride Painting was willing to take on. Quote was reasonable, and we were given a time when the job could be done. The painter got on with the job after explaining his process, and the job was completed on time. The final price matched the original quote.

Everyone we dealt with at Pride Painting from the estimator, to the painters, and the manager were extremely professional, competent, polite, and courteous. They exceeded our expectations in every way and we couldn't be happier with the entire experience. Also, we shopped around and we found their pricing to be very fair. We will be using them again to paint the exterior of our home. Thank you to everyone at Pride Painting!

Where Do We Paint in Sooke

Pride Painting’s Victoria office is based in Oak Bay on Beach Drive, and we run West Shore and Sooke work through the dry season.

We serve all of Sookeincluding the town centre, Sunriver, Whiffin Spit, Saseenos, Milne’s Landing, Broomhill, Otter Point and East Sooke.

Whether your place is a 1970s cedar cottage near the harbour, a newer family home in Sunriver, or an oceanfront build facing the strait, the prep is what decides how long the finish lasts.

Painting in Sooke is rarely a simple recoat. It means finding and repairing the rot before it spreads, timing the work to the dry window, and specifying coatings that handle rainfall and wind most of the region never sees. That is the work we do here.

About Sooke

Sooke

Sooke sits at the western edge of the Capital Region where the suburbs give out and the coast takes over. The harbour and Whiffin Spit anchor the town, East Sooke Regional Park and the Sooke Potholes bracket it, and Highway 14 carries on past it toward Jordan River and Port Renfrew. It has grown quickly over the past two decades, adding subdivisions like Sunriver alongside long established rural properties and oceanfront homes. It also gets substantially more rain and wind than Victoria, which shows up on every exterior in town.

Homes and Architecure of Sooke

Sooke’s housing runs from rural to brand new with not much in between. Older stock includes 1960s and 1970s cabins, cottages and ranchers, many with cedar siding, wood trim and additions built over time, plus working rural properties on acreage with barns and outbuildings. Newer subdivisions such as Sunriver and the areas around the town centre are largely post 2005, built with fibre cement, board and batten and contemporary colour schemes. Along the harbour, Whiffin Spit and out toward East Sooke you find custom oceanfront homes with heavy glass and exposed cedar. Wood is far more prevalent here than in the suburban municipalities.

What that means for a paint job:

  • Sooke’s rainfall shortens exterior repaint cycles compared with Victoria or Sidney
  • Older cedar and wood trim usually needs real repair work before any coating goes on
  • Oceanfront properties combine salt, wind and driving rain, which is the hardest combination there is
Weather and how it affects paint in Sooke

Weather is the defining factor for paint in Sooke. The town receives considerably more annual rainfall than Victoria, and it arrives with wind off Juan de Fuca Strait that drives water sideways into south and west elevations. Combine that with heavy forest cover and you get persistent damp, moss and algae on shaded walls, and wood rot in trim, sills and fascia that would last far longer thirty minutes east. The dry exterior window is narrower here, running roughly late May through mid September, and it is worth booking early. Expect shorter repaint cycles than the rest of the region, particularly on exposed and oceanfront properties.

Permits, bylaws and heritage rules for painting in Sooke

Repainting an existing house in Sooke does not require a building permit. There is no heritage conservation area or municipal design review governing residential colour choice. A few practical items matter more.

Development permit areas. Sooke has environmentally sensitive, riparian and hazard related development permit areas covering shoreline, watercourses and steep slopes, which is a meaningful share of the district. Painting a house is not regulated by these, but work involving site disturbance, clearing for access or staging near a creek or bank may be. Confirm before mobilising equipment on a sensitive site.

Stratas. Newer developments including Sunriver contain townhome and strata housing with approved exterior colour schemes. Owners in those complexes need strata council approval before changing an exterior colour.

Trees and access. The District regulates tree cutting, and many Sooke properties are heavily treed. Pruning for ladder, staging or lift access gets cleared first.

"I would Highly Recommend Pride Painting!"

Their service was very customer oriented from the get go and they communicated well. The painters were professional, well mannered, and relaxed. I felt confident in their abilities and could leave them to their work without concern. I was happy with the result of the painting, save for a couple of minor imperfections which weren’t noticed until the paint had really come together. When I let Pride Painting know of my concerns regarding the imperfections, they took it seriously and, in my perspective, made it a priority to fix without delay. The painters were back quickly, within my availability, and remedied the imperfections. The end result was fantastic. I am very happy with this company, and would absolutely go to them again or recommend them to others.

"Would definitely Recommend Pride Painting to my Neighbours and Friends"

Thanks to Jin and Alfonso from Pride Painting for helping paint the exterior of my house. My house is quite large, and they spent a couple of weekends completing the project. They worked efficiently and professionally throughout the entire process. Both of them were very polite and paid great attention to detail. I’m very happy with the results and would definitely recommend Pride Painting to my neighbors and friends for any future painting services.

When prepping a home for residential painters, here are some key points to keep in mind:
  1. Clear the Area: Remove any furniture, decorations, or obstacles that could hinder the painting process. Clearing the area will provide easy access for the painters and protect your belongings from potential damage.
  2. Protect Surfaces: Cover or move anything that cannot be removed, such as large furniture or fixtures, to shield them from paint drips or splatters. Use drop cloths, plastic sheets, or painter's tape to protect floors, countertops, windows, and other surfaces not being painted.
  3. Clean the Surfaces: Ensure that the surfaces to be painted are clean and free of dust, dirt, grease, or other contaminants. Wash the walls with a mild detergent and water, and allow them to dry thoroughly before the painters arrive.
  4. Repair Any Damage: Inspect walls, ceilings, and other surfaces for cracks, holes, or imperfections. Repair these areas with spackle or putty, and sand them smooth to ensure a high-quality finish.
  5. Remove Wallpaper or Loose Paint: If wallpaper or loose paint is present, remove it before the painters begin. Properly strip wallpaper or scrape off flaking paint to create a clean, even surface.
  6. Communicate Your Expectations: Clearly communicate your expectations, color choices, and any specific requirements to the painters. Discuss any concerns or questions to ensure they understand your vision for the project.
  7. Consider External Factors: If painting the exterior, trim any shrubs, bushes, or tree branches that may obstruct access. Ensure the painters have a clear path and adequate space to work safely.
  8. Notify Occupants or Neighbors: If you're in a shared building or close to neighbors, notify them in advance. This allows them to take precautions, such as closing windows or moving vehicles.
  9. Secure Valuable or Fragile Items: Move any valuable or fragile items to a safe location away from the painting area to prevent accidental damage or disruption.
  10. Plan for Temporary Inconveniences: Be prepared for possible disruptions, such as limited access to certain areas or changes to daily routines. Coordinate with the painters to minimize inconvenience.

By following these preparation steps, you can help ensure a smooth and successful painting process when working with residential painters.

How much does a residential paint job typically cost?

The cost of a residential paint job can vary based on several factors, including the size of the home, the type and quality of paint used, the complexity of the surfaces, and your geographic location. On average, however, you can expect to pay between $2,000 and $5,000 for a standard-sized home.

Please check out this blog and vidoe where we breakdown how much it costs to do interior painting.

How long does a residential paint job usually take?

The duration of a residential paint job depends on factors such as the size of the project and the number of coats required. Typically, it can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to complete.

Do I need to prepare my walls before painting?

Yes, proper preparation is crucial for achieving a good paint job. You should clean the walls to remove dirt, dust, and grease. If there are any holes or cracks, they should be filled and sanded. Additionally, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to ensure better adhesion and a smoother finish.

Can I paint over wallpaper?

While it's technically possible to paint over wallpaper, it's generally not recommended. Paint may not adhere properly to the wallpaper surface, leading to a subpar result. It's often better to remove the wallpaper before painting to ensure a smooth and long-lasting finish.

How often should I repaint the interior of my home?

The frequency of repainting depends on several factors, including the quality of the previous paint job, the type of paint used, and the level of wear and tear in your home. On average, interior paint should be refreshed every 5 to 10 years. However, high-traffic areas like hallways and kitchens may require more frequent repainting.

Can I paint in cold or humid weather?

Ideally, painting should be done in moderate temperatures (around 50-85°F or 10-30°C) and when humidity levels are relatively low. Cold or humid weather can affect the drying and curing process of paint, leading to potential issues like poor adhesion or longer drying times. It's best to consult with a professional painter to determine the optimal conditions for your specific project.

Do I need to vacate my home during the painting process?

In most cases, you can remain in your home during a residential paint job. However, it's a good idea to discuss this with your painter, as there may be situations where temporarily vacating the premises is recommended, such as when strong odours or extensive work are involved.

How do you create color schemes, and how can I visualize them for my painting project?

We create color schemes based on expert color theory to ensure a harmonious look for your space. To visualize your own color schemes, we recommend using the Sherwin-Williams Color Tools available here. This tool lets you design and see different color combinations, helping you choose the perfect colors for your project.
