The Ceiling Above the Shower
It usually starts small. A bit of paint lifting above the tub. Some flaking in the corner the fan never quite reaches.
Every bathroom problem is a moisture problem wearing a different hat. A room that goes from cold and dry to hot and saturated twice a day is genuinely hard on a painted surface — and bathrooms are the room most likely to have been painted with whatever was left over from the hallway.
These come up constantly:
“The paint is starting to peel ever so slightly above where the bath is. Small bathroom, ceiling included.”
“There’s mold forming above the shower stall in the ceiling paint. Can you use a proper paint that will actually hold up?”
Both are fixable, and neither is fixed by simply rolling fresh paint over the top. Painting over a peeling bathroom ceiling without preparing it properly buys you a few weeks before it does exactly the same thing again, usually taking the new paint with it.
Doing it properly means scraping back what’s loose, feathering the edges, blocking any staining with the right primer, and finishing with a product actually made for a wet room. It’s more work than it looks like — and it’s the difference between a repair and a delay.

Bathrooms Need Different Paint
Almost nobody asks us for moisture-resistant paint by name. It’s the thing that matters most in this room and the thing people don’t know to ask about, so here it is plainly:
- Flat paint is the wrong choice. It holds moisture and marks the moment you try to wipe it. A moisture-resistant eggshell or satin lets the room be cleaned.
- Mildew-resistant products exist for exactly this. Most major manufacturers make a bathroom-specific line. They resist new growth — they don’t cover existing growth, which has to be cleaned and treated first.
- The ceiling needs it more than the walls. Steam rises, hits the coldest surface in the room and sits there. That’s why the ceiling fails first.
One honest caveat: no product survives a bathroom that doesn’t ventilate. A fan that’s undersized, vents into the attic, or gets switched off the moment the shower stops will reproduce the same problem regardless of what’s on the walls. We’re painters rather than ventilation contractors, so we’ll flag what we see rather than diagnose it — but a good repaint on top of an ongoing moisture problem is money spent on a delay.
Why Choose Pride Painting
A bathroom is a small job, and small jobs are where corners get cut — a quick roller over a peeling ceiling and out the door. We’d rather scrape it back properly, block the staining and use a product built for the room, because the alternative is you calling someone again in a year. Written estimate, clear scope, and we’ll tell you if we think something other than paint is the actual problem.

How Much Does It Cost to Paint a Bathroom?
Less than a larger room, but not proportionally less. A powder room might be forty square feet of wall, but it’s forty square feet made almost entirely of edges — around the vanity, mirror, toilet, door casing, baseboard and window. There’s very little you can actually roll.
The main variable is the ceiling. Sound ceilings are quick. Ceilings that need scraping, priming and stain blocking take considerably longer, and that’s where the price moves.
Got more than one? Doing them together is meaningfully more efficient than one at a time — the setup, protection and product are shared across all of them. Worth mentioning every bathroom in the house when you ask, even the ones you’re undecided about.

A Small Job We’re Happy to Take
Plenty of painters aren’t interested in a single small bathroom. We are. It’s usually a short, contained job with a disproportionate effect on how the room feels, and it’s one of the easiest things to tick off a list.
Ensuite and primary bedroom together is the most common version of this, and it’s how most people already think about the job. If you’re doing the bedroom, the ensuite is the obvious add-on and barely extends the schedule.
Getting ready to list, or just moved in? Bathrooms are one of the first rooms people want sorted either way. Guests use your bathroom — it’s the one room a visitor will be alone in, with time to look around. See pre-sale painting or pre-move-in painting depending on which side of the move you’re on.
If it’s part of a larger project, see interior painting, or our condo painting page if you’re in an apartment or condo. Refinishing the vanity is covered on our kitchen and cabinet painting page — it’s the same work, and doing it alongside your kitchen cabinets costs less than booking it separately.
How We Paint a Bathroom
- Tell us what’s happening — how many bathrooms, whether the ceiling’s included, and any peeling or staining
- We look at the ceiling properly — whether it needs scraping and priming is what decides the quote
- Protect the room — vanity, fixtures, tile and flooring covered
- Scrape, sand, prime — failing paint removed, edges feathered, staining blocked
- Moisture-resistant finish applied — a product made for a wet room, not hallway leftovers
- Cleaned up and handed back — usable, same day in most cases

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does paint keep peeling off my bathroom ceiling?
Almost always moisture combined with preparation that didn’t account for it. Steam condenses on the ceiling and gets behind a coating that wasn’t properly bonded or wasn’t suited to a wet room. The lasting fix is scraping back the failure, priming appropriately and using a moisture-resistant product — plus making sure the room actually ventilates.
What kind of paint should I use in a bathroom?
A moisture-resistant finish in eggshell or satin. Most major manufacturers make a bathroom-specific line with added mildew resistance. Flat paint is a poor choice — it holds moisture and marks when you clean it. High gloss is durable but shows every imperfection in the wall.
Can you paint over mould in a bathroom?
Not directly. Surface growth needs to be cleaned and treated before painting, and the underlying moisture cause needs addressing or it returns. Mildew-resistant paint helps resist new growth; it does not cover existing growth. If we see anything that looks like a larger issue than surface mildew, we’ll say so rather than paint over it.
My bathroom ceiling has a brown stain. Will paint cover it?
A blocking primer will stop an old, dry stain bleeding through. But a brown stain often means water from above rather than steam. If the source is still active, painting over it is temporary. We’d want to look before telling you which situation you’re in.
Do you take on just one small bathroom?
Yes. Small single-room jobs are welcome and usually quick. If you have more than one bathroom, doing them in the same visit is more efficient than booking separately.
